What Are The Safety Regulations for Home Lifts?

Modern home lifts are designed specifically for use in private houses and are built around safety. There are two different safety standards that they should comply with including:

  • EN81-41, which is the European Safety Standard for Home Lifts

  • Machinery Directive regulations 2008

It basically means that when it comes to domestic lifts, they will have the safety systems to protect everyone whilst in travel or for those around the lift, including family, children, and pets.

Key Lift Safety Requirements – Safety Features Explained

While models vary, most quality home lifts include several layers of safety in order to conform with the safety requirements of the standards.

Emergency stop controls

Home lifts are fitted with clearly marked emergency stop buttons inside the lift. If pressed, the lift stops immediately.

This gives reassurance if something doesn’t feel right during travel.

Power failure protection

A common concern is “What happens if there’s a power cut?”

Modern home lifts are designed so that:

  • The lift will not trap you between floors

  • Battery or manual lowering systems will always allow you to return safely to the ground floor

  • Doors remain operable so you can exit safely

Obstruction and pressure sensors

Home lifts are designed to stop if they meet an obstruction. Safety edges and pressure sensors on the lift will ensure that:

  • The lift stops if something is underneath it or on top of it.

  • Movement won’t continue if resistance is detected

  • The VM through floor lifts have an open top car (not fully enclosed) and have safety sensors all around the open top to prevent any trapping

  • The Stiltz home lifts products have a half height door for entry and exit, protected with a “light curtain” which will detect movement outside the car and stop the lift (e.g. if you put your arm out of the lift, it will detect it and stop till your arm is safely back inside the lift car

This is particularly important if you are concerned in any way about pets, grandchildren, or other family members walking in and around where the lift is situated.

Door and access safety

Home lifts include safety features that prevent movement unless:

  • Doors are correctly closed

  • The lift is safely positioned at floor level

Fire Safety

Many home lifts are fitted with a Fire Seal protection. This means that when the lift is in the downstairs or upstairs position, the top of the platform sits in the hole in the floor and provides a fire seal around the lift.

When in the downstairs position it is safe to walk on the board above if needed. If the lift user wants to drive the lift upstairs it will not work if someone is stood on the trapboard above as it’s a safety sensor.

Emergency Lowering and “Battery Backup” explained

All home lifts are fitted with an emergency lowering system, so the home lift will always be able to drive you to the ground floor to enable you to get out of the home. I have seen other home lift providers say that this is a “battery backup,” and to be absolutely clear – it is not quite what it seems! Emergency lowering will do one travel to the downstairs floor, and that’s it. Common misunderstandings mean customers may misinterpret this as it will take you back upstairs (like during a power cut), but it will not. For this, you will need an optional extra called a UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply, which will enable a few trips between floors, like in a power cut.

Comparing home lift safety vs stairlift safety

Both solutions can be safe — but they manage risk differently. During a home assessment visit, as we do stair lifts and home lifts, we undertake a thorough risk assessment to ensure any product recommended will suit the best needs and safety of the user. Sometimes an Occupational Therapist can help with the assessment, if you have one allocated to you.

Stairlifts rely on safe transfers

A stairlift is safe if you can:

  • Sit down and stand up securely

  • Transfer without losing balance

  • Maintain control at the top and bottom of the stairs

If those transfers become difficult, the risk increases.

Home lifts remove the stairs entirely

A home lift:

  • Eliminates the need to use the stairs

  • Reduces the risk of falls

  • Offers consistent, level access
